Frequently Asked Questions
How is The Camper’s Crust different from the Complete Crust kits?
The Camper’s Crust centres on a bare cast iron camp Dutch oven with legs and a frying-pan lid. It also includes a long-handled dough mixer and pot lifter. If you mainly bake in your kitchen and prefer enamel cookware, explore our Complete Crust Cloche Kit or Double Complete Crust Kit.
Does the kit include sourdough starter?
Starter is sold separately. You can add our Hibiscus Coast Heritage Sourdough Starter to your order, or follow our instructions to create your own starter from scratch.
The included jar and spatula help you feed and maintain your starter.
Do I need electricity to mix the dough?
No. The long-handled dough mixer is a manual tool. You’ll still need a suitable bowl or container for mixing and somewhere to prepare and proof your dough.
Can I use the lid as a frying pan?
Yes. Turn the lid over to use its cooking surface as a frying pan, giving you another way to prepare meals with the same pot.
How do I care for bare cast iron?
Dry it thoroughly after cleaning and maintain its seasoning with a light coating of cooking oil. Avoid leaving it soaking or putting it away damp. Bare cast iron needs different care from enamel-coated cookware.
Is this kit suitable for beginners?
Yes, although baking over coals takes practice with heat control. Learning the dough-making process first will help you focus on managing the bake when you take it outdoors.
Visit our sourdough recipes and how-to guides for help getting started.
Does the kit include a bread storage bag?
No. If you’d like reusable storage for your finished loaf, add a beeswax-lined bread bag separately. Let your bread cool completely before storing it.
What else will I need?
Bring flour, water, salt, an active starter, kitchen scales, a mixing bowl and suitable heat-resistant gloves. For outdoor baking, you’ll also need an appropriate cooking area and fuel, with outdoor cooking permitted at your chosen location.
