Dutch Oven Singles & Loaf Lifters
Choosing a Dutch Oven for Your Home Baking
Buying a sourdough Dutch oven separately is a practical way to build your own baking setup or add a different loaf shape to your kitchen. Cast iron holds heat, while a covered pot traps moisture released by the dough during baking, helping your loaf expand before the crust sets.
Which Dutch Oven Shape Should I Choose?
Round Dutch ovens suit round loaves, known as boules. Oval pots suit longer loaves, called batards, while rectangular options offer another shape for your bread.
A bread cloche has a shallow base and a domed lid, making it easier to place your dough onto the baking surface. Before choosing, check the pot dimensions against your oven, proofing basket and usual loaf size.
Enamel or Plain Cast Iron?
Enamel-coated cast iron needs no seasoning and has a smooth surface that is easy to clean. Plain cast iron needs its seasoning maintained and should be dried thoroughly after washing.
Both are useful for home bread baking. Choose the finish and care routine that suit you, and follow the instructions for your particular pot. Our Dutch oven care guide will help you look after it.
What Does a Loaf Lifter Do?
A reusable silicone loaf lifter sits beneath your dough, with tabs that help you lift the baked loaf out of the pot. It can help reduce sticking and makes removing bread more manageable.
Choose a lifter that fits your baking vessel and check its maximum temperature before use—the temperature limits vary between our lifters. Always use suitable oven gloves when handling hot baking equipment.
